Generation Two - Chapter Six

One week from now, and it would be my birthday.

One more week, and I would officially be a young adult. Graduation was just around the corner now, exams had finished and all clubs were throwing leavers ceremonies. Including mine. Caelan hadn't been part of any activities, but I had been part of two, and in this last week I had award ceremonies for both.

The most exciting moment of it all was when I was debating for presidency for the debate club. Of course, the presidencies never lasted long, since I wouldn't be returning to school in the autumn, but it wasn't about that. It was about being recognised as the best skilled member, the one who could give the most convincing arguments.

I had prepared a lot for this, and it all paid off. I won the debate, and was declared the 48th president of my school's debate club. This meant that my picture was taken, and hung up amongst all the other previous presidents.

Also, I was given this trophy. I didn't have much in my room besides my bed and night table, but now my trophy was one of my few possessions. It was shiny, and looked golden (even though it probably wasn't), and I was so proud of it.

To make good things better, the "advantages" of our new home were brought before my eyes everyday. Wild horses passed through what was technically our garden twice most days. Sometimes, I got really close to one and I had a feeling that they were getting used to us, too. It was amazing to be so close to nature all the time, and I loved it. Riverview was a pretty green town anyway, with trees and flowers everywhere, hills in the background, and wildlife everywhere, but I felt like we had secured the best possible spot for ourselves.

It was one of those days when I was outside and felt almost overcome by the beauty of it all, that I thought about rebuilding the house. Not yet, of course, we hardly had the money to buy a new table and chairs, but one day. Mom had always made good money as a professional athlete, and I was going to be bigger than her. I'd earn more money, and I'd be able to transform our house into a wood cabin paradise.

In all this beauty, old habits were still coming through as well. I had only stolen once since I had taken Connor's pony, and that had only been as a test for myself, kinda like a bravery rite or somethin'.

But then, one day at school, Connor had invited me over. I eventually had to use their bathroom, and saw this beauty! The intricate design of it had me captured, and I took it.

Just two weeks later, as I was over at Leon's, I used their bathroom, and saw this cute little medicine cupboard. It belonged to his sister, Tess, but, well... I really liked it, so I took that, too. I wasn't sure if it was bathroom stuff that I liked, or some other reason, but I had never taken anything that didn't belong in the bathroom. Apart from Connor's pony, but I had been a child then.

I did feel bad though. Not two days passed and I felt guilty for taking her medicine cupboard. I bought a big box at the post office, and sent it back without my name on it. I wanted her to have it back, but I didn't want her to know that it had been me who had taken it. Things were going so well with her brother, and I didn't want to ruin it.

Connor, however, seemed to be a little pissed of with me. If he even knew, that was. One day, he invited me over after school again, but when I arrived at his place he wasn't there. Danielle and their parents were laughing and joking in the living room, and asked me to come in, but when I realised that he wasn't there I left. I wasn't sure whether he knew that I had stolen from him twice by that point, but assumed that he probably did and used this as a chance to get back at me.

I was still trying to bond with Mom. We often played chess together on our new chess table, which had been an early graduation present. She was good at it, but I was better, and usually beat her easily.

Sometimes she seemed confused when we were playing, which then in turn worried me. I knew that she knew the rules, so that couldn't have been the reason. She had told us once how she had used to hear voices when she had been younger, but, according to her, that hadn't happened for many years.

But I was worried that maybe, her health was slowly decreasing after all. One evening I was using the slip and slide, when I noticed her shouting at the bin and knocking it over on purpose. It couldn't have been an accident, because she had declared how she was "gonna show 'em" just before kicking it with her foot, which had sent it flying.

I went inside as it was getting a little cold outside, and I had started to freeze. I didn't even realise that she had stayed outside all this time, while Caelan and I were doing our last set of homework. Suddenly, the air around us went cold, and I just had this really bad feeling. Like something was wrong.

Mom had passed away.

We found her ghost in the garden, near the slip and slide. The grim reaper was easing her over to the other side, while Caelan and I couldn't help the tears from falling.

After Mom's death, things were different around the house. The walls and everything inside them was still the same, of course, but it felt different. My Momma was gone, only days before our graduation. Before our birthdays. She was going to miss out on the biggest moments of our lives. I had always expected that she wouldn't live to see our weddings, or to meet her grandchildren, but our graduation was something so different. It was so soon.

The rooms seemed empty now. Especially the kitchen/dining room/living room, since they were technically one big room, and the long corridor upstairs. It didn't seem right to enter her room, so we didn't.

As our birthdays crept closer, we decided to still celebrate, but only with a small circle of friends. Some happiness, we thought, would be good for us, and the comfort of our friends was sure to be good, too.

Still, standing in front of our cakes, waiting to blow out those candles, seemed odd without Mom. She should have been there.

All three of our guests had made it. Leon was such a welcome sight, Danielle had brought Connor, and we had decided to invite Dad. It had been years since we had last seen him. After their divorce, we had simply gone separate ways, all of us. Seeing him again now of all days was weird, but at least we had one parent there.

As Danielle was clapping excitedly, and Leon was scaring the shit out of Ted with that stupid noisy thing, I felt myself getting more thrilled for the future. Mom was gone, and we couldn't change that, but we could erect a nice family graveyard for her, to remember her. Some form of memorial, if nothing else. I was about to start my career, and who knew what was waiting for me and Leon?

Whatever it was, I was ready for it.

Generation Two - Chapter Five

I was very excited the whole day of Prom. Ever since Leon had asked me to go with him, I could hardly think of anything else. My dress was ready, all that had to happen now was for the rest of the day to pass, Leon to come and pick me up, and the traditional Limo to arrive.

Ten minutes of that day I spent signing up for the debate club. I had been considering it for several weeks, and had the right afternoons off during the week, so I thought I could give it a try.

When it was finally time for us to jump into the Limo and leave for the dance, my brother behaved like a complete idiot. He had been sneaking through the house ever since Mom had grounded us, and I had assumed that he continued even after our punishment had ended as a way of pissing of Mom. I had hoped that he'd walk normally at least for this night, but, well, I had been wrong.

I had been so sure that he'd ask Danielle to be his date, but he never did. In the end, he went on his own, but he didn't seem to mind.

I felt gorgeous that night. My dress had cost a little fortune, and I was sure that I wouldn't be wearing it for the last time. But wearing it now, for the first time ever, I felt special.

The whole evening was amazing. Caelan managed to somehow get into a few fights, but was voted Prom King which raised his mood for the rest of the night.

And myself? Leon made sure that I had everything I needed. He kept bringing me drinks (non-alcoholic, the chaperones had made sure of that), danced with me again and again, even when the music started to slow down and everyone started to dance a lot closer. That's when he told me that he had feelings for me, and I told him the same. He had been a great friend to me ever since our childhood, and since the moment he had asked me out to this dance I had known. I had fallen for my best friend, and I had my feelings confirmed when he held me close, and kissed me.

I had never felt anything like it. The whole evening had been magical, and I owed it to Leon.

Mom was so proud of our prom pictures that she hang them up above the sofa. I slept in the next day, but when I woke up my first thoughts were with Leon. He had been so charming all evening, and I actually wanted to go on another date with him.

In fact, I felt so good that morning that I decided to cook breakfast. I had never made waffles before, or anything that involved actual cooking, but I was feeling adventurous. Luckily, they didn't turn out too bad! They were edible, anyway.

The weekend came around, and Leon asked me out again.

I suggested going to the swimming pool, partly because I had been wanting to go for weeks and partly because I wanted to see him with no shirt on. The latter didn't work, because he did wear a shirt, but the cool water still felt amazing.

I also started spending more time with Mom. Our relationship had turned sour after my party, and things between us hadn't really been the same since she had grounded me and my brother. I was very aware of her age, and although she was doing well and was healthy as far as I could tell, I didn't want to regret not having spent enough time with her.

As it turned out, being friends with her again was easier said than done. She still seemed to be mad at me, and responded to most things with as short a sentence as she could think of. She didn't laugh at my jokes, and seemed distant. As a result, I felt like I couldn't talk to her, and it both irritated me and frustrated me.

I found solace in our new bathtub. It wasn't exactly the best one on the market, but soaking for half an hour in the hot water was pure bliss. I locked the door, would have lit a candle had we had any, and relaxed.

A few weeks had passed since prom, and things between Leon and me were still going strong. I had been over at his place a few times, and we'd had several pillow fights and re-matches. His parents were real nice, too, and I was starting to get to know his younger sister, Tess, better.

And, yes, we did do couple stuff, too. At first it felt a bit weird to make out when his parents were right behind us, watching TV, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Leon was an amazing kisser, so I couldn't say that I didn't like getting used to it.

He took me out a lot, too. Sometimes, we'd go out for dinner together, or lunch, or we'd go and watch a film. One month after prom, and I still felt my tummy do a somersault every time he called.

I couldn't be sure, because I had never felt like this before, but I thought that this was what people called love.

And if I was right, it had hit me pretty hard.

Generation Two - Chapter Four

"You do the floor and I do the shower" was what I had told Caelan more than half an hour ago. Gross, cleaning these things sure took longer than I had thought! And they were sticky, and disgusting!

My idea had been to clean the entire bathroom before Mum made it home, so that maybe she wouldn't be mad us and wouldn't ground us. We did get the bathroom done in time, but Mom wasn't too impressed either way. Great, all this hard disgusting work for nothing.

"How dare you throw a party while I was gone? I thought I'd raised you kids better than this! You could have been hurt!" I had no idea how we could possibly have been hurt, but this was not a good moment to argue with Mom.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

"You're grounded, for a week. Leave the house and I'll double your time." That meant no fishing trips for me. I wasn't too happy about that, considering that nothing had happened. We didn't have alcohol at home, we didn't have loud music, and we definitely didn't have any neighbours who could have been annoyed with us, so I really didn't see what the big deal was.

I watched Mom leave my room, and called Danielle as soon as she was downstairs. Technically, Mom had only forbidden me to leave the house, so phone calls and having friends over was still fair game.

"Hello?" I heard her say on the other end.

"Hi, Dan, it's me. Have you got a sec?"

"Sure, what's up?" Danielle always sounded so happy and chirpy, it was hard not to feel the same when talking to her.

"I'm grounded."

"Why, what have you done now?"

"You know freakin' well what I've done, you were there!"

"Ooooh, your Mum found out about your little party?"

"She did, she grounded me the moment she came home." In that second I heard a loud cry of Oh man! coming from downstairs. I could very well picture the face to go with it.

"And I guess Mom's grounded Caelan, too."

"Why, what's he done?" She sounded a lot more outraged than she had about me being grounded. Thanks a lot, friend.

"He was there, too, remember?"

"So, what, she grounded him for not stopping you? Guess that makes sense."

"I don't really care, as long as he gets to suffer with me."

I hang up quickly after that, because I had a sudden but fantastic idea.

I wanted to set a trap. For Mom, specifically. Nothing too awful, so she couldn't really ground me any longer for doing it, but something to get her a little mad.

I heard her on the treadmill from our living room, so I knew she was distracted. Quietly, I snuck to the sofa, and pulled out a whoopie cushion from my pockets. I placed it on the sofa, feeling relieved that it roughly had the same colour. All being well she wouldn't notice it right away.

"Mom? Can you come in here for a moment?"

"Hang on" she answered, clearly sounding out of breath. "What is it, dear?"

"I was wondering if you would like to watch a film with me? It's already in the dvd player, can you put it on while I get a drink real quick?"

"Sure, dear, why not!"

I moved towards the kitchen to make myself look more believable, but stopped in the frame.

"Oh, dear!" Mom exclaimed, as a somewhat disgusting but unrealistic sound came from the sofa. She jumped up, and looked surprised, to say the least.

I tried to hide my laughter behind my hand, but wasn't sure how well it worked. "Oh, Mom! What did you eat today?" Annoyingly, Mom started laughing herself.

"Well done, dear, I can't believe I fell for that."

"What? You're not mad?"

"How can I be with such a good lie? Very well played, sweetheart."

Well, it was safe to say this didn't work.

It turned out that Mom was very strict with our punishment. Not only was I not allowed to go fishing, or Caelan to go jogging, but we were also not allowed to use the slip and slide.

One morning, when Mom and my brother were still sleeping, I went outside on my toes just to use it. I was still outside when the bus arrived, and quickly rushed inside it so Mom wouldn't see that I had been outside already. It was weird that Caelan wasn't there, the driver waited for ages until he eventually gave up and left.

I didn't see him at school, either, so when we were doing our homework I decided that it was a good moment to start some normal conversation with him.

"How come I didn't see you in school today?"

"Ha, where do you want me to start?"

"The beginning, idiot."

"Okay, so this morning when I was about to leave for the school bus, Mom caught me. She had a go at me because I was trying to go outside, and grounded me for another week."

"Did you tell her you were going to school?"

"Did I have to? It was 8am on a Friday, where else would I be going with all my books?"

"Okay, so what happened then?"

"Hmm, let's see, it was about... three hours later, that she had another go at me because I skipped school."

"Seriously?"

"Yup! She grounded me for another week, but it's okay. I emptied the dryer and put some more clothes into the washing machine, so she forgave me. Completely! I'm no longer grounded."

"You lucky prick."

When Mom wasn't watching, I went outside to use the slip and slide again. She never seemed to realise that I was outside unless she saw me leave the house, so I was pretty safe while I was out. Just had to be careful when I went back inside, and I didn't want to push my luck by leaving the lot completely, so fishing trips were still not happening.

One morning I figured that Mom hadn't forbidden me from having friends over, and I did still want to have an awesome sleep over, so I invited some friends around for the evening. Also, we had this dance coming up at school and I really wanted to go. I was not going to be grounded that night, not if I could help it.

But, just to be on the safe side, I decided to do some cleaning around the house. Caelan had gotten off the hook that way, so maybe it'd work for me, too?

And it did! After I had cleaned the sink in the bathroom, the one in the kitchen and had started mopping up a puddle, Mom came over to me.

"I see you've been working hard, dear. What do you say you're free to go outside again?"

"Jeez, thanks, Mom!"

"Don't let me catch you break the house rules again."

"Of course not" with which I meant that I wouldn't have her find out the next time. And really, that was all she had asked for. She hadn't asked me not to break the rules again, and I wasn't going to point out how it hadn't been her who had caught me, either, it had been that police officer on patrol.

Happy that I was free again, and with only an hour left to go before my sleep over started, I ordered two large pizzas.

My guests were ecstatic to find free food on our kitchen counter, and since Caelan and Mom were also having a slice or two all of it was gone pretty quickly.

Which meant that I now had time to do something I had been dying to do. Leon, his sister Tess, Danielle, Connor and Caelan gathered on the floor around me, and I began.

Fifteen minutes later and all five of them were shuddering messes, so I figured it'd be best to finish up.

"They say her body was never found, but her screams echoed in the night every moon after that day."

"Shit, Ebony, what's the hell is wrong with you?" Tess looked terrified but happy that the last fifteen minutes hadn't been a waste of her time.

"Yeah, what the fuck is going on in that sick mind of yours?" Leon asked, but looked amused. A little pale, but amused.

Like the time before we eventually went to sleep outside. There was something very beautiful and kinda deliberating about sleeping underneath the stars, and I was actually considering to do this every night, sleepover or not.

Just before everyone left the next morning they told me what a great time they'd had. Typical, give them free pizza, scare the shit out of them and they'll love it. But let them use your slip and slide all night long? Not as good somehow!

I spent that day doing some catching up on school stuff, starting with signing up for the study club. Unlike my brother, I didn't have a part time job so I had the time to stay on for another two hours and do my homework and extra studying in peace, without my fat prick bother eating next to me.

From that I went on to do my homework, but not ten minutes into it my phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Ebony. It's me, Leon."

"What's up? Can't get enough of me, huh?" Valid question, wasn't it? He had only just been here, after all.

"I, erm... I was wondering. You know how this dance is coming up, right?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

"Would you- Would you like t-to g-go with me?" Until that moment, I hadn't considered Leon as anything but a friend. But the moment he asked me out, everything around me went quiet, my heart beat real fast and I felt freakin' dizzy. I knew pretty damn well what that meant.

"I- I'd love to."

Little "thank you" teaser!

Here is, as promised, a little something as thank you for reaching the first milestone of 1,000 Hits!

A couple of days ago, Ebony and Caelan went to prom in my game. Ebony had the wish to go, but didn't wish to go with anyone in particular. I was starting to think that she'd go on her own, when someone phoned her, and asked her to prom! :3

Here's a little picture of how their evening went:

It would seem Ebony has chosen her special someone! Or rather, he has chosen her...

Generation Two - Chapter Three

I couldn't resist, only a few days after we had moved into our new home I threw a slumber party. Our old home had been too small, but now we had plenty of space.

I'll admit, it was only a small party. I had invited Leon, and Caelan had insisted we invite Danielle, someone he said was just a friend and who I knew he had a massive crush on.

Leon and I started a pillow fight in my brother's room. Every now and then between breaths, we could hear Danielle giggle from downstairs.

My brother had had the same idea, and was pillow fighting with her in the kitchen. Stupid idiot that he was, he had decided to dye the ends of his hair turquoise, insisting he looked really cool with it. I thought he looked ridiculous, but Danielle seemed to dig it. Either that or she was indifferent. At least he was entertaining her, I didn't want my first slumber party to be a disaster because my brother couldn't entertain a girl.

Eventually, Leon and I had tired ourselves out. I wanted to get to know him better, so I started chatting with him. As it turned out, he was actually a really sweet guy! I had never noticed his awesome eye colour before, or his actually cute smile. I really wanted to be good friends with him. He had always been nice to me as a kid, and I hoped we could carry on whatever it was that we had. It was nice to have a guy friend, most of the girls in my class were so shallow!

Also, when I went to sleep outside (I could hardly pass up an opportunity to sleep underneath the stars, now that I had a sleeping bag!), Leon followed me and placed his bag right next to mine. It was nice to know that he didn't think I was weird for sleeping outside, and I did appreciate not having to be on my own. We talked a little longer, and eventually fell asleep.

When I went to take a shower the next morning, I discovered what my stupid brother had been up to after I had gone outside to sleep. The prick had changed my shampoo for hair dye. Neon Pink hair dye. It took me ages to wash that stuff out again - whatever dye he had bought, it didn't come out easily! My brother, the prankster. I hated him. He'd pay for this, I just hadn't decided how yet. But I would get him!

I had the feeling he enjoyed annoying me in general. Recently, every time I tried to do my homework he'd sit down next to me and start eating. Loudly.

"Do you have to do that now?"

"I'm hungry, sis! Do you want me to go hungry?"

"You're a fat jerk, you know that? As if you'd starve so easily, your body's got more than enough reserves to sustain you for a while. Can't you eat in your room? Or in the living room?"

"Nu-uh, can't do, sis! I don't wanna get crumps in my bed, and Mum would go nuts if she were to find crumps in the living room."

"Then eat on your freakin' floor, I'm trying to study!"

"The floor? But that's hard! This chair is much nicer to sit on!"

There, can you say annoying? He was such an arrogant prick!

Since I wasn't going to get any real studying done, I went outside to go fishing. The river was further away than it had been from our old home, but it was much quieter on the nearest part. There were no houses around, and hardly any traffic. It was the perfect place for me to go and relax and, yes, to get away from Caelan, too.

A few weeks later, and the opportunity for the perfect party hit me. Mum had won some holiday, and would be gone for a few days... Which meant that we had the house to do whatever we wanted. We lived in the middle of nowhere, so there were no neighbours who could tell the cops on us. Besides, we didn't have a radio, we were hardly going to have loud music playing.

The moment Mum had left the house, and her taxi was out of sight, I grabbed the phone and called some friends.

Danielle was the first to arrive. I didn't want things to kick off awkwardly, so I made some conversation with her. She wasn't actually that bad! I could see what my brother saw in her, but had no idea what she could possibly see in him.

About ten minutes later, her brother arrived. No idea why they hadn't arrived together. The pizza I had ordered had been delivered ten minutes earlier, and while I wanted to wait for Leon I didn't want our food to get cold either, so I told everyone to grab a slice.

We only just had enough seats for everyone, so it was kinda a good thing that Leon hadn't made it. Things were a little awkward though, because Danielle had brought her brother. That boy who's toy horse I had stolen in school during show and tell. Pony boy. I didn't think Connor knew that it had been me who had taken his horse, but I knew, and it made things a little weird.

I concentrated on my pizza when he tried talking to me, or talked to his sister instead.

Since we didn't have any music to dance to, we gathered on the sofa after dinner. Connor decided to sit down next to me, so I was kinda forced to talk to him. Otherwise, it would have been obvious that I was ignoring him, and that would have made things even more awkward.

This whole situation was made worse by the fact that my brother was completely taken with Danielle, who seemed just as interested in him. My choices consisted of talking to the guy whose horse I'd stolen, or watching my brother's disgusting attempts at flirting. Difficult situation, wouldn't you say?

I was saved by Danielle, who suddenly remembered that we had a slip and slide and ran to it, clothes falling off to reveal her swimwear faster than my eyes could follow. Grateful for that chance, I followed her, the boys following me just as quickly.

It was getting pretty late, but it wasn't cold out, so none of us minded being in our swim wear. Again I regretted not having any music, a radio or cd player would have been perfect!

"So, my sister is quite taken with your brother!" Oh geez.

"Err, yeah, seems so!"

"They look nice together, don't they?" Why was this happening to me?

Desperate to change the subject, I said the only thing worse than I'm the one who stole your toy pony! "Didn't want to bring your girlfriend?" Great, Ebony, now he probably thought I was interested in him!

"Haha, I don't have a girlfriend! It's sickening enough to watch them flirt every chance they get!" Aha, maybe pony boy wasn't so bad?

"I know! My brother hasn't even said it yet! He just blushes every time I mention her."

"I DO NOT!"

"Do, too!"

"Danielle's the same! Wouldn't surprise me to find little Mrs Caelan Blackwood hearts all over her diary!" We burst out laughing, especially when I saw Caelan's bright red face. Danielle didn't seem to care, she kept giving us happy looks.

I had an idea of what she thought was going on, but she was wrong. Connor wasn't such a bad guy, but we had only just met! I was not one of those sluts who wanted to fuck a guy first second they met. Besides, her happy grins were starting to annoy me. If she was going to behave like that every time we met there was no chance of there ever being anything more serious.

We were having fun with the slip and slide until five in the morning. Caelan and I went to our rooms, exhausted. I could hear Danielle's happy squeaks and splashes hours after we had gone inside, so she was clearly still enjoying the slip and slide on her own. Just before falling asleep I noticed Connor passing out in my room, but when I woke up around half nine he was gone.

I found him in the living room on the sofa, while Danielle was having some toast to eat. They had just waited to say good bye, and left.

I was just thinking what an awesome party it had been, when a police officer entered my kitchen (no idea how she had managed to get inside, pretty sure the door had been shut) and lectured me for having had my teen party. An hour after my guests had left. How's that for timing? Apparently, some neighbours had complained. WHAT NEIGHBOURS?

No idea how she had even heard of our little get together, but, well, she decided it was best to phone Mom. ONE HOUR after everyone had left.

Ah, hell. Mom would be so pissed.
